ILOILO City – The city government is waiting for funds from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) to start the rehabilitation of five public plazas in the districts of Jaro, La Paz, City Proper (Plaza Libertad), Molo, and Arevalo.
According to Councilor Jay Treñas, TIEZA’s one more requirement from the city government – a Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) resolution endorsing the request of Mayor Jerry Treñas to TIEZA to provide funds for the plaza rehabilitation – was fulfilled last week when the SP passed such resolution.
“We will coordinate with TIEZA para ma-download na ang funds,” said Treñas.
Mandurriao district’s relatively new plaza is not included the rehabilitation program.
“The city government will not spend for the rehabilitation but TIEZA, and this is a big deal for us,” said Treñas.
In his letter to TIEZA, Mayor Jerry Treñas requested funds for Jaro Plaza and Jaro belfry amounting to P75 million; La Paz Plaza – P65 million; Arevalo – P50 million; Molo Plaza – P20 million; and Plaza Libertad – P20 million.
“It is the continuing policy of the local government unit of Iloilo City to provide its constituents with good public spaces as venues for enjoying outdoor recreation, community, and promotion of public health and safety to protect the environment and attract tourists and investors,” read part of the city mayor’s letter to TIEZA./PN
it’s about time for Jaro plaza, among others, to undergo a facelift! it used to be THE PLAZA that was a haven for weary ilonggos not to mention attraction to tourists.
