Iloilo City’s literacy programs recognized

ILOILO City – This city won third place in the 2018 National Literacy Awards (highly urbanized category) of the Department of Education (DepEd).

This was the first time for Iloilo City to join the annual awards.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III hailed the teachers under the city government’s alternative learning system program.

The awarding ceremony on Sept. 6 was held in Baguio City.

The first placer in the highly urbanized category was Butuan City. The second place went to Valenzuela City.

On Aug. 7 validators checked the city’s literacy programs and visited, among others, the Technical Institute of Iloilo City (TIIC) Molo campus, Kabalaka Gallery on Disaster Risk Reduction Management at Ker & Co. Building, and the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of Indigenous Peoples (Ati community) in Barangay Lanit, Jaro district.

The validators were Raquel Castillo, lead convenor of Sustainability and Participation through Education and Lifelong Learning; Elizabeth Cuisia, senior information officer of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA); and Anna Liza F. Bonagua, director of Bureau of Local Government (BLGD) of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

The annual National Literacy Awards recognizes, among others, local governments which have developed and implemented literacy policies, programs and projects that have positive impact on people. (With a report from the Iloilo City PIO/PN)
