ILOILO– Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. affirmed the provincial government’s stance against illegal activities involving foreign nationals in Iloilo.

He issued this statement in response to inquiries from the press about the presence and monitoring of foreign nationals engaged in unlawful acts within the province.

Defensor emphasized that the provincial government, in collaboration with the Philippine National Police (PNP), is actively ensuring that foreign nationals do not partake in illegal activities.

“We are working with the police to enforce the law rigorously. It doesn’t matter which nationality, if it’s illegal, it’s not allowed,” he said.

Although there isn’t a specific standing order issued to the Iloilo Provincial Police Office (IPPO) regarding the monitoring of these activities, the governor noted that such measures are ongoing but not publicly discussed.

He stressed the importance of clarifying the provincial administration’s position to collaboratively address and enforce the laws with local police and mayors.

When asked about potential business offers from groups aiming to establish a Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) in the province, Defensor expressed his disapproval of granting tax holidays or incentives to POGOs employing foreign nationals, particularly in the context of national security concerns and the ongoing issues in the West Philippine Sea.

“I am only willing to consider tax incentives if the employment benefits our countrymen. That’s the trade-off for me,” he added./PN
