ILOILO – The performance of Western Visayas delegates so far in the ongoing 2023 Palarong Pambansa in Marikina City (from July 29 to Aug. 5) has delighted Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.
The region has 813 delegates to the national games – 539 athletes, 131 coaches, assistant coaches and chaperons, and 143 technical working group members.
“I’m very happy,” said Defensor, adding that he planned to be in Marikina City but had to stay when the typhoon-enhanced southwest monsoon brought heavy rains to parts of the province.
As of the Aug. 3, 6:58 p.m. data from the Department of Education (DepEd), Western Visayas had the most gold medals in the elementary and secondary levels with 27.
Western Visayas also leds in Demo Sports with five golds and Para Games with 19 golds, seven silvers and five bronzes.
Defensor said the provincial government would give incentives to medalists.
Below is the partial and unofficial result of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa as of 6:58 p.m. yesterday.
Elementary and secondary levels
* Region I (Ilocos Region) – 20 medals (six gold, six silver, eight bronze)
* Region II (Cagayan Valley) – 15 medals (two gold, five silver, eight bronze)
* Region III (Central Luzon) – 37 medals (nine gold, 11 silver, 17 bronze)
* Region IV-A (CALABAZRON) – 69 medals (20 gold, 28 silver, 21 bronze)
* Region IV-B (MIMAROPA) – 15 medals (four gold, two silver, nine bronze)
* Region V (Bicol Region) – 25 medals (eight gold, 10 silver, seven bronze)
* Region VI (Western Visayas) – 61 medals (27 gold, 21 silver, 13 bronze)
* Region VII (Central Visayas) – 27 medals (nine gold, seven silver, 11 bronze)
* Region VIII (Eastern Visayas) – 12 medals (two gold, five silver, five bronze)
* Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula) – three medals (one gold, two silver)
* Region X (Northern Mindanao) – 32 medals (10 gold, eight silver, 14 bronze)
* Region XI (Davao Region) – 23 medals (13 gold, one silver, nine bronze)
* Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN) – 29 medals (nine gold, nine silver, 11 bronze)
* Region XIII (Caraga Region) – four medals (one silver, three bronze)

* National Capital Region – 69 medals (22 gold, 27 silver, 20 bronze)
DepEd-6 information officer Hernani Escullar Jr. earlier said the region aims to bag this year’s championship crown.
In pre-pandemic Palarong Pambansa, the region ranked third next to the National Capital Region and Region 4A.
Western Visayas also aims to surpass its record in the 2019 Palarong Pambansa in these sports events: long jump (secondary girls), shot put (secondary girls), 3,000 meters steeple chase (secondary boys), 1,500 meters (secondary boys), javelin throw (elementary girls), and swimming (200 LC meter freestyle, elementary girls)./PN
