ALTHEA Rose Martirez and Ma. Petrina Abegail Aguirre of Iloilo City claimed the girls’ doubles gold in the lawn tennis event of the Batang Pinoy 2019 Visayas Qualifier leg at the La Paz Tennis Court.
Martirez and Aguirre bested their opponents from La Carlota City, Negros Occidental to capture Iloilo City’s first-ever lawn tennis gold medal in Batang Pinoy.
The pair reached the finals by defeating the Negros Occidental team.
“This is historic for Iloilo City as it was our first time to win a gold medal in Batang Pinoy lawn tennis,” head coach Alven Santiago told Panay News. “Before, it’s always Cebu and Cebu province dominating this event.”
Iloilo City also showed its wares in taekwondo with Kean Ryth Bornazal and Elizabeth Marie Borres ruling the mixed pair poomsae and Aryan Nicole Nonis, Seth Ryan Templanza and Airon Melvin Aguana bagging team poomsae gold.
Sheriemei Anne Hojilla, Seth Hendrick Porquez, Feri Carmel Perez, and Angel Grace Cerbas also had gold medals in kyorugi while Sophia Grace Go, Sofia Jessie Uy, Mj Aspera, and Amelia Carla Victoria had silvers in kyorugi.
Joycie Pearl Tacuel, Aiken Emmanuel Avaricio and Artha Camille Tanagon took bronze medals each in the poomsae events, while Lorraine Grace Baydo finished third in kyorugi.
Iloilo City was also dominant in the dancesports competition with gold medals from Cliff Justin Pareja and Kealyn Therese Castigador in the Juvenile Modern Standard Category C and D.
Aleia Robbyn Muyco and Mico Andrie Hechanova also finished with gold medal in Junior Latin-American Category A, while Japhet Lacuarta and Hanna Catherine Boluso finished with bronze in Juvenile Latin-American Category A.
Antique swimmer Guiliver Clive Clemente, meanwhile, chipped in two more gold medals in the boys’ 13-15 50-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter Individual Medley events to add up to his 200 meter breaststroke and 200 meter individual medley.
Theone Fedelicio also add two golds in the 12 and under 200-meter breastroke and 12 and under 50-meter breastroke, while Iloilo City’s Kristel Rhey Napallatan captured gold in girls 12 and under 200-meter individual medley.
Ilonggo swimmers also chipped in gold medals from Jillian Bata in 12 and under girls 50-meter butterfly, while Dee Catedrilla ruled the 12 and under girls 200-meter breaststroke and Francesca Jabian topped the 13-15 200-meter breaststroke.
Negros Occidental also splashed gold medals in swimming with Jay-r Punzalan ruling the boys 13-15 100 meter backstroke, Alexi Cabayaran topping girls’ 13-15 100-meter backstroke and Troy Castro bagging boys under 12 50-meter butterfly gold.
Earl Buncio, meanwhile, clinched golds in boys 13-15 50-meter butterfly and 200-meter medley, while Cabayaran, Mareanne Apdo, Ela Ruelos and Rianna Montelibano captured the relay gold.
In athletics, Negros Occidental’s Joycie Satia and Rhea Mae Cainoy scored a gold-silver medal finish in the girls’ 1500-meter event. Cainoy was able to recover later in the day by taking the gold in girls 800-meter dash.
Brineth Cupan also bounced back from a silver medal finish in 400-meter dash by finishing on top in 200-meter dash. Marden Villaruel bagged the gold in boys 200 meter event.
Airex Villanueva also finished with gold medal in the boys shot put event, while Renzo King Catulay of Victorias City captured the gold medal in the boys’ 800 meter dash event./PN
