Iloilo logs 1,030 traffic accidents in 6 months

ILOILO – Between Jan. 15 and July 15, this province recorded 1,030 vehicular accidents, data from the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) showed.  

The accidents resulted in 484 physical injuries, 480 damage to property, and homicide with 66.

These vehicular accidents were much lower compared to the 1,115 cases recorded in the same period last year, according to IPPO director, Police Colonel Gilbert Gorero.  

Records further showed that 29 minors were involved in the accidents; the rest were of legal age.

Mostly involved in traffic accidents were private vehicles (905), motorcycles (487), trucks (472), and passenger jeepneys with 133.

Gorero said among the reasons for road mishaps were drivers being drunk (42 cases), mechanical problems (11) and road under repair (six).

The 13th Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) proposed measures of addressing these traffic accidents.

How’s the implementation so far?

The 1st Engineering District of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Region 6 (Fort San Pedro, Iloilo City) have already installed rumble strips in accident prone areas and crossings.

As to the road works, several warning signage were also put up by contractors across the region.

In April 2020, the SP passed the following resolutions aimed at reducing vehicular accident in the province:

* requesting the IPPO to install checkpoints in the strategic locations in Iloilo province to help reduce the number of vehicular accidents

* requesting the heads of district and provincial hospital in the province of Iloilo to include in their data gathering the cases of accidents for better information and for future guidance

* recommending to the governor to cause the Land Transportation Office (LTO) deputization of at least two police personnel per municipality in the province of Iloilo

* recommending to the governor to cause the conduct of seminars to the drivers of ambulances, fire trucks, rescue and response vehicles owned by the Iloilo provincial government and by the component units of Iloilo province

* requesting the Provincial Legal Office to study the legality of the suggested ordinance mandating business establishment to sell motorcycle only to the buyer with valid driver’s

* requesting the governor to cause the effective implementation of Provincial Ordinance No. 2017-742 (Traffic Code of the Province) and Provincial Ordinance No. 2019-212 (Ordinance for the Safe Implementation of Road and Bridge Infrastructure Projects)./PN
