MANILA – Iloilo MVP Taekwondo Gym and Zarraga Taekwondo Dojang finished their campaign strong in the 2021 Smart/MVPSF Asian Open Online Taekwondo Poomsae & Speed Kicking Championships on Monday night.

The Denmark Pinggol-mentored taekwondo squad garnered four more gold medals and a bronze in the speed kicking as they capped off their campaign with 15 gold, seven silvers, and nine bronze medals.

Angela Joy Marie Bermejo led the Iloilo City-based team as she earned a gold medal in Junior Female Black Fly A, while Jannah Ysabel Velez dominated the Junior Female Black Welter A category.

Red Dyron Lusaya bannered the cadet gold medalists with a golden finish in the Cadet Male Welter C. Shaena Maryel Lazara was a gold medal awardee in the Senior Female Black Fin A.

Senddrick Valencia was the lone bronze medal winner in the Junior Male Black Light Middle C category, while Alyanah Julienne Tionko and Denzel Espadilla fell short of medal finishes in their category.

“As a coach, I am glad since the majority of our players that participated have won medals,” Pinggol said. “Our players will surely do everything to improve their performance further in our next events.”

On the other hand, the Zarraga Taekwondo Dojang bagged gold, silver, and bronze medals to finish the three-day virtual taekwondo event with five gold, three silver, and five bronze medals.

Far Eastern University’s Ma. Regina Abello won gold in the speed kicking, while Imar Pinuela settled for a silver medal finish, and Jose Ricardo Subong Jr. chipped in a bronze medal.

“Despite the training difficulties due to the modified enhanced community quarantine, kinaya pa din ng mga players,” Zarraga Taekwondo Dojang head instructor Angelo Herradura Osayda told Panay News.

“What is more impressive about our players is, despite nothing that much training, increase naman ‘yung scores nila compare sa previous national competitions. Lahat sila nag-improve and nai-angat ‘yung performances nila,” he added./PN
