Iloilo, Negros sweep PCAP rivals

MANILA – Iloilo Kisela Knights and Negros Kingsmen continued their winning ways in the 2022 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines Wesley So Cup over the weekend.

The Kisela Knights stayed undefeated after nine matches following a 16-5 domination of Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Chess Association and a 16.5-4.5 annihilation of Palawan Queen’s Gambit.

Iloilo walloped Cagayan de Oro in Blitz event, 6-1, with wins by Hovhannes Gabuzyan (Board 1), Fiona Guirhem (Board 3), Rogelio Antonio Jr. (Board 4), Rolly Parondo Jr. (Board 5), Fritz Porras (Board 6), and John Michael Silvederio (Board 7).

The Kisela Knights were equally dominant against Cagayan de Oro in the Rapid game, 10-4, with two pointers each from Gabuzyan, Antonio, Parondo, Porras and Silvederio.

Iloilo also dominated Palawan in Blitz game, 6.5-0.5, with points by Gabuzyan, Cherry Ann Mejia (Board 3), Antonio, Parondo, Silvederio (Board 6) and Mark Jossel Mariano (Board 7).

The Kisela Knights also had a 10-4 score against the Queen’s Gambit in the Rapid game courtesy of full two points from Gabuzyan, Porras (Board 2), Antonio, Silvederio and Mariano.

The Kingsmen, on the other hand, improved its standings to 7-2 after dominating Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates, 14.5-6.5, and also manhandling Toledo City Trojans, 16-5.

Negros were held to 3.5-3.5 draw by Surigao in Blitz game with only Tran Minh Thang (Board 1), Joel Pimentel (Board 2) and Theseus Benitez Jr. (Board 4) having full points and Bernadette Galas (Board 3) splitting.

The Kisela Knights bounced back in the Rapid game with a 11-3 rout of Checkmates with two points each from Thang, Pimentel, Benitez, Edsel Montoya (Board 6) and Ted Montoyo (Board 7) and split by Edmundo Gatus (Board 4).

Negros defeated Toledo City in the Blitz game, 5-2, with full points from Pimentel (Board 1), Thang (Board 2), Galas and Montoyo and half points by Gatus and Brylle Arellano (Board 5).

The Kingsmen also walloped Trojans in the Rapid event, 11-3, with full two points by Thang, Galas, Montoya and Montoyo and one-point each by Pimentel, Gatus and Arellano./PN
