ILOILO – A total 146 student athletes who bagged medals in the 2019 Palarong Pambansa in Davao City from April 27 to May 4 received cash incentives from the provincial government.

Fifty-four coaches and trainers also got cash incentives which were released yesterday morning at the Iloilo provincial capitol lobby by the Iloilo Provincial School Board.

A Palaro gold medal had an equivalent cash incentive of P15,000; silver medal, P10,000; and bronze medal, P7,500.

For coaches and trainers, the cash incentives were P7,000 (if student athlete won a gold medal), P5,000 (if student athlete won a silver medal), P3,500 (if student athlete won a bronze medal).

Vince Jason Buhayan of Carles, Iloilo who was Iloilo’s most bemedalled Palaro athlete got an additional P25,000 cash incentive.

Buhayan, student at Nicomides S. Tubar Sr. National High School in San Dionisio, Iloilo, harvested three gold medals in 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 4×100-meter relay; a silver medal in 400-meter run; and a bronze medal in 4×400-meter run.

Overall, Buhayan’s Palaro cash incentives reached P87,500.

According to Dr. Jerry Bionat, chief of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and board secretary of the Iloilo Provincial School Board, the cash incentives were the provincial government’s way of saying thank you and honoring student athletes, their coaches and trainers for bringing honor to Iloilo.

The incentives should also inspire more student athletes to improve their performance and excel, added Bionat./PN
