ILOILO – Iloilo Province has emerged as the province with the most barangays in the Philippines, with its 1,721 villages even exceeding Metro Manila’s 1,715, according to the latest geographic data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
The distinction places Iloilo ahead of all 81 other provinces in the country based on the Second Quarter 2026 Philippine Standard Geographic Code National and Provincial Summary released by the PSA.
Iloilo’s 1,721 barangays are spread across its 42 municipalities and lone component city, Passi City.
Among Iloilo’s municipalities, Miag-ao accounts for the biggest share with 119 barangays – by far the highest in the province.
It is followed by Leon and San Joaquin with 85 barangays each; Lambunao, 73; Cabatuan, 68; Janiuay and Santa Barbara, 60 each; Calinog, 59; Tigbauan, 52; and Alimodian, 51.
At the opposite end, San Rafael has the fewest barangays in Iloilo with only nine.
It is followed by Bingawan with 14; Pavia, Leganes and Banate with 18 each; New Lucena and Anilao, 21 each; Mina, 22; Balasan, 23; and Zarraga, San Miguel and Batad with 24 each.
The other localities are Passi City with 51 barangays; Maasin and Pototan, 50 each; Tubungan, 48; Dueñas, 47; Igbaras, 46; Dumangas, 45; Sara, 42; Oton, 37; Ajuy, 34; Carles, Dingle and Guimbal, 33 each; Badiangan and Lemery, 31 each; Barotac Nuevo and San Dionisio, 29 each; San Enrique, 28; Barotac Viejo, 26; and Concepcion and Estancia, 25 each.
Elsewhere in Western Visayas, Antique has 590 barangays; Capiz, 473; Aklan, 327; Iloilo City, 180; and Guimaras, 98.
Nationally, Metro Manila’s 1,715 barangays come closest to Iloilo’s total.
Leyte follows with 1,478 barangays; Pangasinan, 1,364; Quezon, 1,209; Lanao del Sur, 1,164; Bohol, 1,109; Batangas, 1,077; Cebu, 1,066; and Camarines Sur, 1,063.
At the regional level, Eastern Visayas has the largest number of barangays at 4,365, followed by CALABARZON with 3,992, Bicol Region with 3,471, Western Visayas with 3,389, Ilocos Region with 3,267 and Central Luzon with 3,105.
The other regions are Central Visayas with 2,312 barangays; Zamboanga Peninsula, 2,314; Cagayan Valley, 2,311; Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, 2,185; Northern Mindanao, 2,022; MIMAROPA, 1,460; National Capital Region, 1,715; Negros Island Region, 1,353; Caraga, 1,312; Cordillera Administrative Region, 1,178; Davao Region, 1,162; and SOCCSKSARGEN, 1,097./PN
