MANILA – Iloilo-based chess players collected six medals during the 19th ASEAN+ Age-Group Chess Championships on Wednesday at The Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City.
National team member Fiona Geeweneth Guirhem, who hails from Lemery, Iloilo, led the delegation with two gold medals in the individual and team event of girls under-18 category.
Cyril Felrod Telesforo, who is from San Joaquin, Iloilo, captured a silver medal as part of the team open under-16 event and bronze medal in the individual open under-16 class.
The other medals were from Guimaras native Kimberly Colaste, silver medal winner in the girls under-12 team, and San Joaquin, Iloilo native Checy Aliena Telesforo, who won a silver in the girls under-14 team.
Other chess players from the Iloilo Provincial Chess Association who participated were Vaughn Robert Oberio (open under-8), Muellene Ymber Leving-Babao (girls under-10) and Reynald Tejero (open under-16).
Three hundred players from countries like powerhouse Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar, and Thailand plus India, South Korea, Denmark, and Switzerland joined the tournament sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
The nine-day event, which has drawn the support of President Rodrigo Duterte, Davao City mayor Sara Duterte and the Department of Education, staked IM and FIDE master titles for the participants./PN
