ILOILO City – The local government wants to make Quanzhou in Fujian province, China a sister city.
Mayor Jose Espinosa III invited Quanzhou officials “to further promote a friendly relationship between the two cities,” said Councilor Liezl Joy Z. Salazar.
Salazar authored the Sangguniang Panlungsod resolution that authorizes Espinosa to sign the sisterhood agreement on behalf of the city government.
Both cities “would endeavor to promote friendly contacts … and develop exchanges and cooperation in … economy and trade, science and technology, culture, education, public health, and sports,” she said.
Espinosa and the vice chairman of the Quanzhou City Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference will have to sign a letter of intent for the deal, Salazar added.
The local government already established sister-city ties with another Chinese city – Qingdao in Shandong province – in 2006.
Salazar is the chairwoman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on domestic and international relations. (With PNA/PN)
