Iloilo sees highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases

ILOILO – The province logged 82 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on Monday, so far its highest number of cases recorded in a single day.

Eighty of the new cases were all indigenous or local cases and two others were locally stranded individuals (LSIs), according to the Provincial Health Office (PHO).

Of the 80 local cases, 24 had unknown exposure to a COVID-19 positive case while 56 have known history of exposure to a positive case.

Also, the number of COVID-19 cases recorded in October more than doubled what they were in September.

In September, the province had 373 infections, but in October that rose to 726.

“Local transmission cases are getting so alarming. We have even made a new peak record at 726 in one month period,” said Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, PHO officer-in-charge.

She reiterated that municipal governments needed to be stricter in enforcing ordinances and executive orders aiming to avert the spread of the disease.

“If we don’t act as one, many will be getting sick from the virus and may lost not only their livelihood but also their lives. We need strict enforcement of our executive orders and ordinances. Dapat buligay,” Quiñon appealed.

She likewise encouraged the public to practice the “3M strategy” (Mag Maskara, Mag Distancia kag Manghinaw).

As of Nov. 2, Iloilo province had a total of 2,225 COVID-19 cases.

Of the figure, 1,425 patients recovered, leaving 743 active cases being monitored. The number of deaths still stood at 57./PN
