KALIBO, Aklan – Team Iloilo showed its dominance in arnis on Day 2of the 2023 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet on Friday at the Saint Gabriel College here.
Nathan Balajadia bagged six gold medals in elementary boys anyo event individual single weapon, individual double weapon, individual espada y daga, and team single and double weapon and espada y daga with Melchor Bataican III and John Cagatan.
Carl Wayne Reyes also had five golds in secondary boys anyo individual double weapon and extra lightweight before he teamed up with Kyle Angelo Tiron and Marc Alquin Canto for anyo team sword and dagger and single weapon golds.
The trio of Reyes, Tiron and Paul Angelo Tiron nabbed the gold in anyo team double weapon.
Kyle and Paul also had individual gold medals in the bantamweight and featherweight division, respectively, while Canto also notched a gold medal in the half lightweight category.
Mary Clarlyn Alviar finished with four gold medals after topping the secondary girls anyo individual (single weapon) before teaming up with Clamence Marie Alag and Emerald Jane Legario for golds in espada y daga, double weapon and triple weapon events.
Diofe Arbel Fenis snagged three gold medals in elementary girls individual single weapon, double weapon and espada y daga, while Emerald Jane Legario and Ramon Aquino also captured a gold for Team Iloilo.
Negros Occidental, meanwhile, notched four golds with the trio of Arreanah Alvarado, Margarette Lagruto and Ferbelle Padreguil notching three golds in team events, while the tandem of Lagruto and Kervin Tubera also won a gold in pair event.
Vince Mariano also delivered two gold medals for Aklan in anyo individual single weapon and sword and dagger, while May Bernardino, Sarah Nichole David and Suzzette Roselo also captured a gold each.
Guimaras got two golds from Sheena Astrologo in anyo individual double weapon and Precious Vargas in anyo individual sword and dagger. Venice Hope delos Reyes extra lightweight
Team Iloilo also made its presence felt in athletics on Friday with Franklin Catera and Joshua Patorara having a gold-silver finish in secondary boys triple jump, a reverse from the Patorara-Catera gold-silver in the long jump event last Thursday.
Winnie John Paclibar and Carl Dave Casiple had a gold-silver medal finish in elementary boys shot put, while John Masuhol and Kent Paul Burdan also had a 1-2 finish in the secondary boys 400-meter dash.
Other gold medal winners for Iloilo were Shane Labinghisa in secondary girls 3000-meters run, Anika Hiti-ayon in secondary girls long jump, Jazzybelle Mesterio in elementary girls 100-meter hurdles, Jhonmark Pagdato elementary boys 400-meter dash and Shane Bullos in secondary girls 400-meter dash.
Negros Occidental got five gold medals with Marianne Faith Pedales ruling the elementary girls shot put and discus throw, Bianca Seroy in the secondary girls triple jump, Mico Villaran in the secondary boys 100-meter hurdles and Airex Villanueva in the secondary boys shot put.
Iloilo swimmers also splash gold medals on Friday with Val Gilbolinga and Kriztel Napallatan capturing two each, while Raizo Espinosa, Hans Inigo Parreno, Jan Renier Pasadilla, Hyiana Lamanosa and secondary boys 4×50 relay team.
Negros Occidental added more golds from its Day 1 collection courtesy of two by Alexi Cabayaran and one each from Anika Matiling, Savannah Secuelan, Maxene Uy, Earl Buncio, Intnyr Gabana, and elementary boys and elementary girls 4×50 relay team.
Aklan tankers also captured two gold medals courtesy of Johan Pablo Gomez and Jennuel Booh de Leon, while Capiz took home a gold from Chelsea Mari Billantes.
In chess, Negros Occidental’s John Donguines bagged two golds in secondary boys individual blitz and team blitz (with Karl Patrick Badinas), while Precious Dolar won a gold in girls blitz individual.
Team Iloilo took home the secondary girls blitz team behind Muellene Babao and Queen Rose Pamplona, while Iana Rose Sotaridona bagged two golds in elementary girls blitz individual and blitz team (with Andrea Balbontin).
In gymnastics, Althea Rose Crisostomo captured four golds for Negros Occidental in elementary girls aero, aero dance team (with Dave Ofquila, Nicole Rosatasi and Lee Sumbi), trio (with Rosatasi and Sumbi) and aero trio (with Ofquila and Rosatasi).
Arian Araez has three gold medals for Negros in secondary girls individual, trio event (with Rolando Ducay Jr. and Dayniel Ducay) and aero dance team (with the two Ducays and May Lobaton).
Host Aklan also captured two gold in gymnastics courtesy of tandems of Prince Karl Provido and Vrence Pamularco (mixed pair) and James Torres and Ariella Panagsagan (aero mixed pair).
In archery, Antique’s Jaypee Pingol bagged his third gold in secondary boys 60-meter event, while Princess Heart Pillora took home the gold for Guimaras in secondary girls 60-meter event./PN
