Iloilo tops secondary level, paragames at WVRAA Meet; Cash incentives await medal winners

ILOILO – Athletes from this province who earned medals at the recently concluded 2025 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet are set to receive cash incentives.

The event, held from March 2 to March 7 at the Binirayan Sports Complex in San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, saw Iloilo taking the overall lead in both secondary level and paragames.

On the other hand, according to the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6, Negros Occidental was the overall champion in in the elementary level.

Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. confirmed that athletes who won medals will be rewarded in accordance with Provincial Ordinance No. 2020-217, which mandates cash incentives for athletes, as well as for their coaches, assistant coaches, trainers, and chaperones, when they excel in sports competitions sanctioned by the Department of Education, the Philippine Sports Commission, and the Philippine Olympic Committee.

Defensor also expressed pride in Iloilo’s consistent success at the WVRAA, congratulating all delegates for their hard work and achievements. He attributed the province’s continued dominance to the well-developed sports programs spearheaded by the Iloilo provincial government, which has enhanced the skills and talents of local youth in various athletic disciplines.

“When we send our delegation, we are prepared. You know why? Because of the sports events and activities that we have, our developmental leagues, and our varsity program. This strengthens our teams through continued engagement and exposure, ensuring we have a stronger delegation each year,” said Defensor.

Iloilo Province’s WVRAA delegation was made up of 548 atheletes, 86 coaches, 14 assistant coaches, and 37 chaperones.

* Champion – Negros Occidental (71 gold, 46 silver, and 50 bronze)

* 1st Runner-Up – Iloilo (66 gold, 67 silver and 33 bronze)

* 2nd Runner-Up – Antique (nine gold, three silver, and 14 bronze)

* 3rd Runner-Up – Guimaras (six gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze)

* 4th Runner-Up – Capiz (five gold, 21 silver, and 31 bronze)

* 5th Runner-up – Aklan (five gold, 13 silver, and 41 bronze)

Secondary

* Champion – Iloilo (114 gold, 82 silver, and 79 bronze)

* 1st Runner-Up – Negros Occidental (97 gold, 87 silver, and 67 bronze)
