ILOILO City — Ilongga beauty queen Alexie Mae Brooks is set to raise the Philippine flag on the international stage as she represents the country in Miss Eco International 2025 in Egypt this April.
In a recent send-off ceremony, Brooks expressed her excitement and determination to bring pride to Iloilo and the Philippines.
“I’m doing great. I’ve been pretty busy with my preparation,” Brooks shared.
She highlighted the rigorous training she has undergone, especially in question-and-answer coaching, pasarela (runway training), and advocacy work.
“My Q&A coach, Sir John, is here with us, and he knows how intense our schedule is. I’ve been consistent with my pasarela training, and I’ve been reaching out to organizations that align with my advocacy. I want to make sure that I am not just physically prepared but also mentally ready to represent our country,” she said.
Expect a Show-stopping Performance
Filipinos are known for their pageant excellence, and Brooks assured fans that her performance will be one to watch.
“We are already known for our pasabog (show-stopping moments), so expect stunning styling, looks, and gowns. Miss Eco also has segments like Eco Wear and National Costume. My NatCos designer, Sir Tata Blas, is creating something amazing, so there’s a lot to look forward to,” she said.
Pressure of Bringing Home the Crown
With the Philippines’ strong track record in Miss Eco International — including Kathleen Paton’s 2022 victory and Chantal Schmidt’s first runner-up finish last year — Brooks acknowledged the pressure of achieving another milestone.
“Yes, I feel the pressure. This is my first international competition, and the Philippines is known for our pageantry excellence. But as they say, pressure is a privilege. I’m excited and ready to give my best,” said Brooks.
Tribute to Her Late Grandmother
Brooks also opened up about the personal struggles she faced on her pageant journey, especially after losing her beloved grandmother, Lola Basing, last year.
“After Miss Universe Philippines, I was really excited for Miss Eco. But when my grandma passed away, I lost motivation. She was my inspiration in every competition, and I wondered who I would dedicate my win to,” Brooks shared.
Eventually, she found strength in the memory of her grandmother and the support of her fellow Ilonggos and Filipinos.
“Even though she’s not physically here, I know she’s watching over me. I’m dedicating this journey to her, to Iloilo, and to the entire Philippines,” she said.
Standing Out in a Competitive Field
Brooks believes that her athletic mindset sets her apart from the other contestants.
“All candidates are beautiful and intelligent, but what makes me different is my perspective and mindset. As an athlete, I’m very competitive, and I always have a winning mindset. Whether this competition brings a lesson or a victory, I’m ready to embrace it.”
Will She Join Miss Universe Again?
When asked about a possible return to Miss Universe Philippines, Brooks remained open to the idea.
“I can’t say no because I’m still young at 24. I’d love to join again, but right now, my priority is Miss Eco. After this, we’ll see where life takes me.”
“Abanse Babaye” for Women’s Empowerment
Brooks is bringing her advocacy, “Abanse Babaye,” to the international stage.
“My advocacy focuses on empowering women and promoting good health and well-being, aligning with SDG Goal #3. Women are natural caregivers, both for their families and the environment, and I want to highlight the importance of taking care of ourselves so we can better care for our surroundings,” she explained.
Ecological Concerns: Addressing Over-Tourism
As part of Miss Eco International’s advocacy, Brooks highlighted over-tourism as a pressing environmental issue.
“Traveling allows us to enjoy nature, but it can also harm it. We need to be responsible by properly disposing of waste and preserving our surroundings,” she said.
Brooks kept some details of her wardrobe under wraps but teased exciting designs.
“My NatCos and Eco Wear are designed by Sir Tata Blas, who made my iconic ‘Udto-Udto’ design. My final gown will be by Sir Rian, and we’re working on something completely different for Miss Eco — something worth watching out for!”
A Message to Her Late Grandmother
In an emotional moment, Brooks dedicated a message to her Lola Basing:
“Lola, I know you’re still watching over me. Thank you for raising me and supporting me. I love you, and I hope I can bring home the crown for the Philippines,” she said./PN
