ILOILO City – Twelve closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will soon be installed along the 14-kilometer stretch of the Sen. Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Avenue, or commonly known as Diversion Road in Mandurriao district.

This was part of the Motor Vehicle Recognition Enhancement System (MVRES) program of the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

According to Atty. Gaudioso Geduspan, assistant director of LTO Region 6, the CCTVs will be installed in strategic locations (areas frequented by people, or those used as entry and exit points).

The goals: better traffic monitoring.

The security cameras would also help the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSTMO) monitor the peace and order situation in the avenue especially at night, according to the Geduspan.

Road mishaps and other emergency situations can be immediately responded, too, he added.

LTO-6 will create a regional command center to manage the CCTV cameras.  It would probably fall under its operations division, said Geduspan.

The contractor and a team from the LTO-central office will be here today.

“They will discuss the functionality of the MVRES program,” Geduspan told Panay News. “Diri ta mabal-an ang specs sang CCTV… high-tech nga CCTV kay maski gamay nga details sang salakyan ma-capture ‘ya. We will see how the discussion will progress.”

Geduspan is yet to disclose as to when the CCTV would be installed.

The LTO-6 is also considering installing CCTVs on the Dumangas port in Iloilo province, Bacolod Port in Negros Occidental, Fort San Pedro here and the circumferential road in Oton, Iloilo, the area often complained of drag racing.

Kon gab-i ang aton nga reckless driving kag gintunaan sang road crash amo ‘na ang aton tutokan. Kapin pa subong nga damo nagapalab-ot sang impormasyon angut sa nagakarera sa aton dalanon. Siguro sa pag-install sang CCTV not only sa areas nga gin-mention but possible man sa dalan nga very viable sa karera,” Geduspan said.

To curb road accidents, Geduspan appealed to the public to always adhere to the traffic rules that include the wearing of helmets or seatbelts and maintain proper driving speed./PN
