Ilongga jumper nets bronze in ASEAN School Games opener

MANILA – Alexie Mae Caimoso Brooks carried the cudgels for Western Visayas athletes as she snagged a bronze medal in girls high jump of the 2018 ASEAN School Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Leon, Iloilo native eked out 1.69 meters to finish behind gold medalist and fellow Filipina Evangeline Caminong (1.74) and Chitkhokkraud Prangtip of Thailand (1.72) on Saturday.

“This is a great experience for me to play for the [Philippines] in Malaysia,” Brooks said. “Muntik na akong hindi maka-participate dito dahil sa visa issues but good thing I was given a chance.”

Other Western Visayas-based athletes faltered in their medal matches.

Franz Gela Romualdo Bintad of Bacolod City settled for sixth place in girls discus throw with 35.27m.

Another Bacolodnon, Bernalyn Bejoy, also fell short in girls 400m hurdles, placing fourth with 64.40 seconds. Riza Jane Vallente of the Philippines captured silver with 61.52 seconds.

Camila Tubiano delivered the other medal in the opening day for the Philippines when she finished with bronze in girls 300m dash.

As of this writing the Philippines is on fifth place in the medal tally with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals behind Indonesia (4-2-1), Vietnam (3-0-0), Thailand (2-1-5), and Malaysia (1-5-1)./PN
