Ilongga nets medals in Asian taekwondo

MANILA – Ilongga Julianna Martha Uy netted a gold and silver for Team Philippines at the start of the 2022 Asian Cadet, Junior, & Para Open Taekwondo Championships on Monday at the Ho Chi Minh Indoor Sports Stadium of Military Zone No. 7 in Vietnam.

Uy, a standout of Iloilo City-based Iloilo MVP Taekwondo Gym, teamed up with Acey Blanco Oglayon and Casey De Leon to capture the gold medal in Female Cadet Poomsae Team category.

Uy, who is from Ateneo de Iloilo-Santa Maria Catholic School, bagged her second medal in the week-long competition when she finished runner up in the Individual Female Cadet poomsae event.

Elizabeth Marie Borres, who is from A. Diasnes Gym, clinched a bronze medal in the Team Female Junior Poomsae event along with Antonnette Medallada and Aesha Oglayon.

Justin James Diasnes is looking to add up to the A. Diasnes Gym’s medal haul for the 45-member Philippines Taekwondo Team when he plunges to kyorugi action on August 24 to 25.

“We are happy for the medal achievements of Julianna and Elizabeth, their hard work and perseverance has paid off,” said head coach Flora Navales. “I am just hoping that Justin will be inspired by his teammates medal wins to also capture a medal of his own.”

Joshua Erece, meanwhile, emerged as a double gold medal winner for the Team Philippines as he ruled the poomsae’s Individual Male Cadet and Male Cadet Team with Caleb Tormon and Lucas Llarena.

Ian Matthew Cordon, on the other hand, had a golden finish in the Individual Male Junior Poomsae and bronze medal in Team Poomsae Junior Male with Paul Rodriguez and Eljay Vista.

Dean Venerable, for his part, added to Team Philippines’ gold medal haul when he topped the Individual Freestyle Cadet Male, while Bob Andrew Rico ended with a bronze in Individual Fresstyle Junior Male.

Maria Nicole Anne Labayne finished the poomsae event with a silver medal in Individual Female Junior Poomsae and bronze medal in the Mixed Pair Junior Poomsae with Rodriguez./PN
