MANILA – Arnel Roa Mandal captured one of the Philippines’ two gold medals in the 8th Wushu Sanda World Cup in Xi’an, China.
The Iloilo City native won the men’s -52kg division after beating India’s Uchit Sharma in two of three championship rounds.
It was the second time Mandal defeated Sharma for a gold medal, the first being at the 2015 World Wushu Championships finals, and the Ilonggo’s redemption after placing second in the 2016 Asian Wushu Championships in Taiwan.
Baguio City native Divine Masadao Wally, on the other hand, won by default in the female -48kg finale after Egypt’s Farida Elsodany was injured.
Meanwhile Hergie Bacyadan settled for a silver medal finish in female -65kg after losing to Sharhbano Semiromi of Iran, while Ilonggo Francisco Solis finished with a bronze medal.
Wushu Federation of the Philippines secretary-general Julian Camacho lauded the effort of the lean Philippine squad. “The [current] medal haul was the best-ever showing of the country in the Sanda Cup,” he said./PN
