Ilonggo boxer KOs Thai foe, keeps ABF title

MANILA – Ilonggo Denver Cuello retained the ABF bantamweight championship after a second round stoppage win of Detnarong Omkrathok of Thailand at the Barangay Vergara Covered Court in Mandaluyong City.

This was the first successful defense of the Cabatuan, Iloilo native of the Asian championship he captured at the expense of Indonesian fighter Jack Amisa last March.

Cuello immediately pushed the pace in the opening round on Saturday night. He pummeled Omkrathok with combination hits before going for the kill in the second round by flooring his foe with a straight.

“I am just glad to perform well anew. This win shows that I still have it,” Cuello said. “I am just thankful to those who trusted me that I can still make a comeback even if I am away for four years.”

The 32-year-old Cuello increased his boxing slate to 38-5-6 win-loss-draw, including 26 stoppage wins, while Omkrathok saw his boxing record dropped to 3-10-0, with one knockout win.

Meanwhile, Antiqueño Edsil Jungco failed to clinch the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) middleweight championship after a unanimous decision loss to Indian fighter Prabhjot Singh.

With the loss, the Bugasong, Antique native saw his record fell to 3-13-7 win-loss record, while Singh increased his boxing slate to 8-4-1 record, with seven stoppage wins./PN
