MANILA – After making a stunning impression in the two-day tryouts, Ryan Calama-an has earned a slot in the De La Salle-Greenhills Greenies team set to compete in the NCAA juniors basketball tournament.

The 6-foot-4 Calama-an was picked by Greenies head coach Marvin Bienvenida and was told to come back in May after he represents Western Visayas in the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in Antique.

“Pasok na si Ryan sa team,” said Ilonggo sportsman Ruding Villaruz, who accompanied Calama-an to the tryout. “He was told to comeback after the Palarong Pambansa to join La Salle’s practice.”

Sta. Clarita International School head coach Rodel Camacho, for his part, said he is happy that Calama-an has been picked by the Greenies even if it means losing one of his key players.

“I am happy for Ryan dahil big opportunity ito sa kanya na maglaro dito sa Manila. And it will put him closer to playing for the UAAP or NCAA in college and then in the PBA,” Camacho said.

“While Ryan leaving is a big loss for the Sta. Clarita, we will just fill that void by tapping some of our Team B players. We also have some rookies coming to the team,” added the Ilonggo mentor.

Calama-an makes a great addition to the Greenies team following the graduation of NCAA Season 92 MVP Troy Mallillin, whose been recruited by UAAP champion De La Salle University Green Archers.

Calama-an played a pivotal role in his team’s championship bids in the 2016 Iloilo Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) and 2017 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) meets.

The Leon, Iloilo-native was also a member of the Iloilo squad that took home the championship in the Visayas leg and silver in the national level of the 2016 Batang PBA tournament.

Meanwhile, Camacho said that, aside from Calama-an, Marvin Cuerbo was also told by the Greenies to return for their training this May as per the request of Bienvenida, who was out of town during the first day of the tryouts./PN
