
MANILA – Ilonggo Edgar Charcos scored on a game-winner as the University of Perpetual Help Altas cruised to a 75-73 win over Arellano University Chiefs in NCAA Season 95 men’s basketball yesterday at the San Juan Arena.
With the score tied at 73-all, Charcos attack his defenders for a floater to surge the Altas ahead, 75-73, with 3.4 seconds left. The Chiefs still has a chance to tie it but Rence Alcoriza’s attempt was blocked by Altas’ Kim Aurin.
The Iloilo City native Charcos finished the match with 15 points and five rebounds while Aurin and Benedict Adamos added 17 and 16 markers, respectively.
With the win, the Altas rose to 2-3.
In the first game, Edson Batiller drained a triple late in the match as the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights survived a furious run by the Mapua University Cardinals to escape with an 89-84 win.
Holding to an 11-point edge late in the fourth period, the Cardinals went on a huge run to cut the deficit to 82-84 with 33 seconds left. The Knights, however, put an end to Mapua’s rally with a three-pointer from Batiller with 19 ticks left.
Batiller finished the match with 15 points while Larry Muyang flirted with double-double 24 points and nine rebounds.
The Knights cruised to its fifth consecutive win after losing its opening match.
“Medyo it’s a bad game,” rued Knights head coach Bonnie Tan. “Sa stats pa lang, we were outrebounded. It’s unbecoming for us dahil we knew we had the advantage. Na-surprise kami na hanggang last second bola pa rin nila.”
Christian Bunag tallied double-double 17 points and 12 rebounds while Laurenz Victoria added 15 markers, six rebounds, four assists and three steals as the Cardinals slumped to 0-5./PN
