ILOILO City – “I’m still in cloud nine.”
This was how Ilonggo fashion designer Jet Salcedo described his feelings hours after Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier was crowned Miss Universe first runner-up.
During the preliminary competition of the annual beauty pageant on Thursday, Pelissier, a survivor of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, wore Salcedo’s creation – a “simple and classy” blue gown.
With a perfect bun, simple accessories and a megawatt smile, Miss Haiti strutted with poise and elegance while wearing an Ilonggo’s masterpiece.
However, it was a big challenge for the couturier to make something simple as his designs were far from minimalist.
“It was definitely a challenge. People know that my designs are different. But I’m glad that it turned out to be beautiful,” Salcedo told Panay News.
Salcedo also shared that he was lucky to be chosen as one of the designers among over a hundred designers in the country.
“There were 100-something designers that were invited. A panel, who are also composed of designers in the country, chose the 86 people who will create the gowns for the contestants,” he explained.
With the milestone, Salcedo urged the local government and other private stakeholders to support the fashion industry in Iloilo, especially young budding designers.
