Ilonggo Edgar Charcos shining bright for perpetual

EDGAR Charcos’ decision to transfer University of Perpetual Help Altas turned out to be a blessing in disguise as he embraces his new role as key player under head coach Frankie Lim.

Charcos, a native of Iloilo City, told Buzzer Beater he is glad to be entrusted by Lim with the starting shooting guard role and plans to repay the trust by delivering wins.

“Being the starting guard, I challenged myself to perform well for my new school,” said Charcos, who was a standout from Sun Yat Sen High School in Iloilo City before moving to Manila.

“I am not thinking that I am a starter. I will just do my job, step up when needed,” he added. “I have my teammates by my side contributing as well.”

Charcos, who had a three-year stay with University of the East Red Warriors before moving to Altas, added that motivational words from Lim inspire him to give his best in every game.

“Coach Frankie is a good motivator. He is diligent in teaching us our plays,” the Ilonggo said. “And he is always there for us, not only for basketball. He gives advice when we have personal problems.”

Charcos had a good outing in their last two matches – he made 27 points in their 78-75 victory over Letran Knights two weeks ago and 22 markers in their 76-74 win over Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals last Thursday.

Altas is currently on third place in the standings with a 2-1 win-loss card, behind Lyceum of the Philippines Pirates (5-0) and defending champion San Beda University Red Lions (2-0).

Young guns from University of Santo Tomas ruled the 2018 Beach Volleyball Republic King and Queen of the Sands tournament recently at The Sands in SM by the Bay in Pasay City.

Babylove Barbon and Jaron Requinton bested Klymince Orillaneda and James Buytrago of National University in a championship showdown of budding beach volleyball talents to rule two-day games.

Undefeated in seven matches, the Barbon-Requinton tandem was impressive in the sand court despite the heavy rain and wind. Another UST pair, Genesa Jane Eslapor and Efraem Dimaculangan, finished third.

Medyo mahirap po dahil sinabayan po ng malakas na hangin at ulan. In the end naging maganda naman po ang naging resulta at pumabor naman sa amin ang pagkapanalo,” Requinton said.

With the championship, Barbon and Requinton are poised to pair with veterans Cherry Rondina and Anthony Arbasto in women’s and men’s beach volleyball tournament in the UAAP.

A total of 13 pairs competed in the two-day college tournament. Players got to play at least 12 sets in the single-round eliminations./PN
