SAN JOSE, Antique – An Ilonggo javelin thrower’s record feat was the lone bright spot for a futile medal campaign of the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) on Day 1 of the 60th Palarong Pambansa yesterday.
With his 59.46-meter throw, James Lozañes of Carles, Iloilo set the record in the secondary boys’ javelin throw to give the host region its first gold in the week-long sporting event.
The performance of the Estancia National High School standout Lozañes erased the 57.81 meters set by Central Luzon’s Bryan Pacheco during the 2013 edition of the annual event.
Finishing behind Lozañes was fellow Ilonggo Ronald Lacson of Carlos Lopez National High School.
Rhealyn De Costa contributed a silver medal in the elementary girls’ shot put.
Meanwhile, Bacolodnon gymnast Kiana Marie Alagaban gave the Negros Island Region Athletic Association (NIRAA) two golds in elementary girls’ individual all around performance and rope event.
Jenny Marie Eusebio followed up Alagaban’s feat by winning a gold medal in the elementary girls’ clubs event of gymnastics.
Cesar Fernandez also claimed a gold medal in high jump event with 1.90 meters.
Alagaban and Eusebio later teamed up with Julianne Arisas to settle for silver in the elementary girls’ group performance event.
As of 5 p.m. yesterday, the WVRAA was at fifth place with one gold, two silver and three bronze medals (tied with Region 5), while the NIRAA was at second place with four gold, one silver and one bronze medals.
The National Capital Region Athletic Association is currently on top with 14 gold, 11 silver and four bronze medals.
Central Visayas is third with three gold, one silver and three bronze medals while Region 4 is at fourth place with one gold, one silver and one bronze medals.
The Palarong Pambansa officially opened on Sunday with President Rodrigo Duterte as guest of honor and speaker./PN
