ILOILO City – Ilonggo producer Jhett Tolentino won his first Grammy award yesterday.
Tolentino, who hails from Barangay Calumpang, Molo district, took home the Best Musical Theater Album for “The Color Purple.”
Tolentino’s team was composed of Danielle Brooks, Cynthia Erivo and Jennifer Hudson as principal soloists; Stephen Bray, Van Dean, Frank Filipetti, Roy Furman, and Scott Sanders as producers; and Bray, Brenda Russell and Allee Willis as composers or lyricists.
“The Color Purple,” which was revived in December 2015, is based on Alice Walker’s novel about African-American women living in Georgia in the 1930s.
The play, directed by John Doyle, also won the 2016 Tony for musical revival.
AWARD-WINNING ILONGGO
In 2013, Tolentino bagged his first Tony Award for producing the comedy “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” that won Best Play.
The year after, he won two Tony Awards for “A Raisin in the Sun” (Best Revival of a Play) which starred Denzel Washington, and “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” (Best Musical).
In a previous interview with Panay News, Tolentino said he hopes to give more opportunities to young theater talents especially in Iloilo City.
When asked on his advice to youngsters who dream to carve a name in theater, he said they have to do something to achieve their dreams.
“Finish what you have started and the later on, if you are already stable, pursue your passion,” he said.
Tolentino finished his accountancy degree at the University of Iloilo. He then moved to the United States to pursue his passion for theater./PN
