Ilonggo Larupay steers Basilan past Bulacan in MPBL

MANILA – Basilan Viva Portmasters halted a two-game losing skid with a 102-80 rout over Bulacan Kuyas in the 2025 MPBL Season on Saturday night at the Pola Gymnasium in Pola, Oriental Mindoro.

Ilonggo Omar Larupay posted a double-double of 20 points and 18 rebounds to go with one assist and one block to be named Player of the Game as the Portmasters improved to a 2-4 win-loss slate.

“Siguro ginawa ko lang ‘yung best ko para maibigay ko sa team kung ano ‘yung kaya ko para maipanalo ang game,” Larupay said after the game. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa coaches na palagi akong ina-advice kung ano ang gagawin.”

Gab Dagangon added 18 markers, including two three-point conversions, Adrian Santos had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, while John Mahari and James Tempra had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Portmasters.

The Portmasters made their presence felt early with three-pointers from Reymar Caduyac, Lorenzo Navarro, and Dagangon for a 21-11 lead before they widened the lead to 50-28 at the half with connections from Jeff Viernes and Dagangon.

Basilan continued to dominate Bulacan in the second half courtesy of inside baskets from Larupay as the lead reached its largest at 26 points at 57-31 midway through the third quarter.

Joseph Marquez finished with 15 points to lead the Kuyas, John Rey Sumido added 14 markers, while Art Aquino, Joseph Celso, and Gino Jumao-as had 12 each as they fell to a 0-7 record.

Meanwhile, Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards (6-0) maintained their unbeaten record after a 74-60 victory over Davao Occidental Tigers-Cocolife (1-1). Jaycee Marcelino led the Rice Vanguards with 21 points./PN
