MANILA – After spending the past few years as a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, Ilonggo boxer Jenel Lausa is set to return to his first love after agreeing to a deal with well-known boxing promoter-manager Dante Almario.
The Concepcion, Iloilo-native was a prized find, according to Almario, due to his impressive boxing record of 10 wins and one draw since turning pro as a super featherweight.
“He (Lausa) is one of the most promising boxers we have right now in the super featherweight division. Sabi nga, matibay, matapang at magaling ito,” Almario said in an interview with sports writer Ed Andaya.
While he is excited to send the Ilonggo boxer for a fight possibly in Australia or Vietnam, Almario said that he will diligently follow the go-signal of the IATF and the Games and Amusements Boards (GAB).
“‘Yung boxing, konti pa lang din ang open depende sa host country. Susunod lang tayo sa sasabihin ng IATF thru GAB dahil para sa kabutihan ng lahat ito. Basta si Lausa, handa lang,” Almario said.
Prior to making his return to boxing, the 31-year-old Lausa was a successful MMA fighter after being offered to fight in the prestigious Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
Lausa returned to boxing late last year where he knocked out Carlos Lopez of Indonesia in the fifth round of their non-title fight in Digos, Davao del Sur before deciding to sign up with Almario to have a better management of his boxing career./PN
