MANILA – Ilonggo mixed martial artist Jenel Lausa hopes to get back on the winning track when he faces American Eric Shelton in the Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) Fight Night 121 on Nov. 19 in Sydney, Australia.

This will be the third fight of the Concepcion, Iloilo native under the prestigious MMA promotions since getting signed last year.

Lausa split his first two UFC matches.

His debut saw him eking out a unanimous decision victory over Chinese Yao Zhikui last Nov. 27 in Australia but the Ilonggo lost in his second match against Russian Magomed Bibulatov on April 8 in New York.

Lausa, also a professional boxer, was supposed to be part of the UFC Fight Night card in Japan on Sept. 23 but his fight was cancelled when his opponent Naoki Inoue of Japan got injured during training.

A former Pacific Xtreme Combat champion, Lausa said he continued to prepare for a new opponent – later identified to be Shelton – when the Japan stint was cancelled.

“I know I will be facing a tough opponent in Showtime Shelton,” he said.

Lausa, 28, will parade an impressive 7-3-0 win-loss-draw record, 1-1 under UFC. He also won five straight MMA matches before his split decision defeat to Bibulatov.

Shelton, who has a 10-4-0 win-loss-draw slate, is expected to give his all to get back on winning form after dropping his last three matches, including a split decision loss to Jarred Brooks on July 29./PN
