MANILA – lloilo City native Jan Jesus Melliza exhibited stellar play as Stallion Laguna clobbered Ilocos United 5-0 in the 2017 Philippines Football League at the football stadium in Biñan, Laguna.
Melliza from the city’s La Paz district finished with four goals to lead the way for Stallion, which bolstered its bid for the Final Four with 26 points on seven wins, eight losses and five draws after the Monday match.
The Ilonggo quickly put Stallion on the board with his goal in the 14th minute over the defense of Ilocos’ Baba Sampana. This was followed by his second conversion just before the halftime break.
Stallion continued its offense in the second half with a close-range shot by Fitch Arboleda before Melliza capped his onslaught with back-to-back hits in the span of a minute for the final score.
Melliza, who previously played for the Far Eastern University football team, said his four-goal performance had nothing to do with getting cut from Philippine Azkals for the AFC qualifier match against Yemen last week in Bacolod City.
“Wala naman po iyon. Supported ko naman po ang Azkals,” Melliza said. “Kung mabigyan ako ng opportunity, iga-grab ko iyon pero suportahan na lang po natin kung ano talaga ang plano ni (Azkals) Coach (Thomas) Dooley.”
The defeat renders Ilocos still on the hunt for an elusive win. Losing for the 14th time, it only got four draws, for a total of 4 points./PN
