MANILA – Ilonggo boxer Leonardo Doronio was again tapped as one of the sparring partners of Manny Pacquiao for the latter’s upcoming match against Jessie Vargas.
Pacquiao will have his ring return on Nov. 6 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Malaking karangalan para sa akin na maka-spar ang isang world champion tulad ni Senator Manny,” the Iloilo City native told Panay News. “Aside from helping him prepare for his fight, may natututunan din ako sa kanya.”
According to Doronio — a Pan Asia Boxing Association lightweight titlist — he still gets hurt by Pacquiao’s punches despite wearing a head gear.
“Mabibigat at mabibilis talaga ang suntok ni Senator Manny,” he said. “Sinubukan ko
ngang makipagsabayan sa kanya, pero ang bilis talaga.”
“Napapagod na nga ako dahil sa hangin lang tumatama ang mga suntok ko,” Doronio added. “Ang masasabi ko lang mabilis pa rin si Senator Manny, at kakayanin pa rin niyang makipagsabayan sa mga mas batang boksingero.”
It was not the first time the Ilonggo served as Pacquiao’s sparring partner. Doronio was also tapped in preparation for the eight-division world boxing champion’s fight against Brandon Rios in 2013.
Doronio (15-13-3, 10 knockouts) said he was willing to serve as Pacquiao’s sparring partner anytime the latter needs his services. “Malaking bagay sa akin ang maka-spar si Senator Manny kaya ready tayo palagi.”
Doronio was still hurting from his third-round knockout loss to WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver lightweight champion Pavel Malikov of Russia in July./PN
