MANILA ā Marinerong Pilipino Skippers rode on the hot shooting of Billy Ray Robles as it scored a 99-83 win over Gamboa Coffee Mix-St. Clare Coffee Lovers in the 2018 PBA D-League Aspirantsā Cup at the JCSGO Gym in Quezon City.
Robles, a native of Estancia, Iloilo, led the scoring Tuesday night with 19 points ā 13 in the opening half ā for Skippers to tally its sixth straight win for a 7-2 card and keep its outright semifinals hopes alive.
Alvin Pasaol tallied 12 markers and grabbed nine rebounds, Rian Ayonayon and Vince Tolentino had 11 points each for Skippers.
āWeāre on a roll and we want to keep on rolling going to the playoffs. Hopefully, we can bring this winning attitude going to our next games,ā said Skippers head coach Koy Banal.
Skippers got off to a strong start, posting a 15-point advantage late in the first quarter and never gave Coffee Lovers any opportunity to bounce back.
Marinero led by as many as 30 (66-36) on a three by a Robles ā who had a stint with Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA last year ā early in the third.
Another Ilonggo, Chris Bitoon, continued his impressive showing with 13 points for Coffee Lovers, which suffered its fifth defeat in nine matches in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Judel Fuentes knocked down the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to lift Centro Escolar University Scorpions past Wangs Basketball-Letran Couriers 79-75.
Keanu Caballero set up the winning play with a nice pass to the open Fuentes for a triple to take a 78-75 lead. Couriersā Bong Quinto then turned the ball over, which led to a game-sealing free throw by Caballero./PN
