ILOILO – As of Jan. 24, 982,041 individuals in this province were deemed fully vaccinated against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Provincial Health Office (PHO) data showed.
The figures were 67 percent of the 1,448,757 target population for vaccination.
A person is considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving their second dose in a two-dose vaccination series, such as with the Pfizer or Moderna brand of vaccines, or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine such as with Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.
Here’s the breakdown of the fully vaccinated in Iloilo province:
* healthcare workers (A1) – 80,445
* senior citizens (A2) – 135,366
* persons with comorbidity (A3) – 144,136
* economic frontliners (A4) – 232,913
* indigent (A5) – 128,941
* rest of the adult population – 112,454
* pediatric population – 147,852
Dr. Maria Socorro Colmenares-Quiñon, PHO chief, said vaccination drive will continue to further increase the number of the inoculated to hasten reaching herd immunity against COVID-19.
Herd immunity, or community immunity, is when a large part of the population of an area is immune to a specific disease. If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, such as a virus or bacteria, it has nowhere to go.
While not every single individual may be immune, the group as a whole has protection. This is because there are fewer high-risk people overall. The infection rates drop, and the disease peters out.
Iloilo province, like the rest In Western Visayas, is under pandemic Alert Level 3.
