INDIA – The production, import and sale of electronic cigarettes was banned in this country, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said.

Sitharaman added an executive order was approved banning vaping products due to its impact on young people.

Vaping – which involves inhaling a mix typically made of nicotine, water, solvents and flavors – is seen as an alternative to smoking which can help you quit, but its impact on health is still not fully known.

The ban will include jail terms of up to three years for offenders.

India – with over 100-million adult smokers – is the world’s second-largest consumer of tobacco products after China, and more than 900,000 people die in the country each year from tobacco-related illnesses.

Its ban came a day after New York became the second state in the United States to prohibit the use of flavored e-cigarettes.(BBC)
