‘Info-tech crucial to Bacolod’s progress’

BACOLOD City – Another public hearing may be needed to discuss the proposed creation of the city’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) office, according to proponent Councilor Em Ang.

Ang stressed that Bacolod “recognizes the vital role of information and communications technology in community development and the need on the part of the local government unit to participate fully in all forms of productive activities and developments currently taking place within the field of information and communications technology in order to cause and propel economic growth as provided in Republic Act (RA) 10844.”

The second hearing will be aimed at determining whether or not the name of the office would be changed.

The Human Resource and Management Office wanted the office be named “Management Information Technology and Computer Services Office,” Ang said.

Ang has yet to set a date for the hearing, though. She said she will first meet Human and Resource Management Officer Herman Aguirre and Management Information Technology and Computer Services head Ramon Delos Reyes.

The first hearing was conducted on Tuesday at the session hall of the Sangguniang Panlungsod. It was attended by various city department heads and representatives from call centers in Bacolod.

RA 10844 was passed on May 23, 2016 to promote the development of local ICT content, applications and services, which may include support for ICT-based start-up enterprises through strategic partnerships.

Ang said that in as much as the city government is eager to attract more investors in the ICT industry, it also wants to ensure that the formation of an ICT office will have the support from all stakeholders./PN
