Inmate hangs self inside NegOcc jail

BY DOMINIQUE GABRIEL BAÑAGA

BACOLOD City – An inmate took his own life by hanging himself inside the lockup cell of the municipal police station of Pulupandan, Negros Occidental.

While not disclosing the victim’s identity, town police chief Major Anthony Grande said he was a 19-year-old man from Barangay Lip-ac, San Enrique, Iloilo.

He had been detained in their jail facility since Sept. 4 this year for a homicide charge.

Grande said prior to the incident, the victim was visited by his sibling and brought him food.

The victim was reported to have only eaten half of his meal. He was next seen by the cops taking off his clothes and entering the comfort room.

After spending about 20 minutes inside the comfort room, one of the police officers called out the victim but received no reply.

When the cop checked the comfort room, he discovered the victim was already lifeless.

Before being rushed to the Bago City District Hospital, one of the police personnel tried to revive the victim. He was eventually pronounced “dead on arrival.”

From what the Pulupandan police gathered so far, the victim used his own clothes to hang himself inside the comfort room.

According to Grande, the victim had been pleading to his family to free him on a P40,000 bail bond.

Since he got no reply, the inmate might have thought that he was abandoned by his family, the police chief theorized.

Grande said they ruled out foul play in the incident./PN
