Inmate stabbed dead inside IDJ

ILOILO – A person deprived of liberty (PDL) at the Iloilo District Jail in Barangay Nanga, Pototan town was stabbed by a fellow inmate at around 6:20 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 7.

Melvin Gimeo, 38, and a resident of Barangay, Bolilao, Mandurriao, Iloilo City, succumbed to multiple stab wounds.

He was declared “dead on arrival” at the town’s Iloilo Provincial Hospital, according to Police Major Roy Tayona, chief of the Pototan Municipal Police Station.

The suspect, meanwhile, was identified as Elbert Ganancial.  

Facing murder charges, he surrendered to the duty jail officer while an improvised bladed weapon used to stab Gemio was turned over to the local police.

“Duha lang gid ni sila ang involved, ang aton nga biktima kag ang suspect.  Wala sang riot nga natabo sa sulod. Sa kun ano man ang gin-awayan nila gina-imbestigaran pa naton,” said Tayona.

Personal visits to the IDJ have been temporarily suspended after the incident./PN
