Int’l group cites Leila de Lima as notable rights defender

Sen. Leila M. de Lima

MANILA – Amnesty International named Sen. Leila de Lima the “Most Distinguished Human Rights Defender” on its first-ever Ignite Awards for Human Rights.

The nongovernment organization will confer the accolade to de Lima and other winners on June 2.

De Lima said she is “deeply humbled” that her fight for human rights, justice and rule of law has been recognized.

“It is with great honor to receive this latest accolade as recognition for my unwavering stance on human rights despite my continued unjust detention and political persecution,” said de Lima.

Her contenders for the citation included Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Ryan Silverio, Nymia Pimentel Simbulan, and Leni Velasco.

Her latest award is a “vindication” from all the “politically motivated, trumped-up charges” filed against her by the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, said de Lima.

The senator thanked Amnesty International for its efforts in promoting and protecting human rights.

“Our shared goals and cooperation only prove that no tyrant can stop us,” de Lima said.

“No matter how influential and powerful those who violate our dignity and human rights are, our strong will and determination will always prevail,” she added. “Truth and justice will always succeed.”

Sen. Paolo Benigno Aquino IV congratulated de Lima for the recognition.

“In her fight to uphold the rights of every Filipino, she talked truth to power and paid with her freedom,” said Aquino.

“Even from behind bars, she continues to share her voice to defend justice, democracy and the Filipino people,” he added.

De Lima is detained at the Philippine National Police’s Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City over charges stemming from her alleged hand in the drug trade at the national penitentiary./PN
