ILOILO City – The Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) had arrested 41 persons for illegal fishing and impounded 24 fishing vessels in a month.

From April 19 to May 19 this year, the IPPO had carried out 19 operations in the municipal waters of Ajuy, Banate, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Concepcion, San Dionisio, and San Joaquin, resulting in the seizure of approximately P59,000 worth of assorted fish.

Police Colonel Bayani Razalan, IPPO director, said these accomplishments were the result of intensified efforts and strengthening law enforcement through increasing of patrols and surveillance in fishing grounds, conducting regular inspections of fishing vessels, and imposing strict penalties to those caught in illegal fishing activities.

Another contributing factors were community involvement by encouraging residents to participate in monitoring and reporting illegal activities, establishing community-based marine protected areas, and promoting sustainable fishing through education, and awareness program.

“I often remind my men not to stop their operations against illegal fishing in northern Iloilo. We will not stop running after those who are engaged in illegal fishing. This is our main thrust when I assumed office,” Razalan said./PN
