Is Comelec doing enough to ensure fair, honest, credible midterm elections?

THE COMMISSION on Elections (Comelec) has been actively enforcing laws against election offenses, particularly focusing on vote-buying and campaign violations. While these efforts are commendable, one must ask: Is the Comelec doing enough to ensure fair, honest, and credible mid-term elections?

Comelec has formed the Committee on Kontra Bigay to enforce laws against vote-buying, vote-selling, and misuse of state resources. This committee includes representatives from various government agencies, such as the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). They are tasked with conducting localized surveillance and reporting of election offenses. While this initiative is a step in the right direction, the effectiveness of localized surveillance remains to be seen. Will it be enough to deter candidates and their supporters from engaging in vote-buying?

Comelec has flagged five senatorial candidates for consistently violating guidelines on campaign materials. Violations include improper sizing and mounting campaign paraphernalia outside designated areas. Comelec has launched Operation Baklas to remove illegal campaign materials and has issued notices to candidates to remove non-compliant posters within three days. This operation is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the election process, but the question remains: Are these measures sufficient to prevent future violations?

Comelec is also emphasizing the use of environmentally-friendly campaign materials. They have created a committee on environmentally sustainable elections and warned candidates that failure to comply with these guidelines could lead to disqualification. This focus on sustainability is a positive step towards more responsible campaigning. However, it is essential to ensure that these guidelines are strictly enforced and that candidates are held accountable for non-compliance.

While the Comelec’s efforts to curb election offenses and promote fair elections are noteworthy, there is always room for improvement. The effectiveness of these measures will ultimately depend on their enforcement and the cooperation of candidates and their supporters. (totingbunye2000@gmail.com)/PN
