ISSA: Hua Siong start basketball title defense, rout Westbridge

HUA Siong College of Iloilo Red Phoenix began their title defense in secondary basketball of the 2018 Iloilo Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Meet with a 72-42 win over PAREF-Westbridge at the Western Institute of Technplogy gym in Iloilo City.

Lee Yansi Jimera led the scoring with 11 points while Carlo Miguel Paguntalan added 9 markers as Red Phoenix dominated the exclusive school for boys from start to finish Wednesday in the category A game.

“It’s a good start for us,” said Red Phoenix head coach Vincent Conlu. “We were able to dictate the tempo early on and build an early advantage. I was also able to test our other players for this game.”

John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University also had a victorious start in secondary boys’ basketball category B with a 71-35 domination of Bethany Life Christian Academy.

In tertiary men’s category, John B. – the defending champions – started their campaign on a wrong foot in a 61-68 defeat in the hands of University of San Agustin. Macdangielo Vargas finished with 18 points while Tyke Bano had 16 markers for San Agustin.

Moreover, Western Institute of Technology escaped with a 92-91 win over Iloilo Doctors’ College in the other tertiary men’s match. Dionel Fatla-onag led the way with 19 points while Marvin Cuerbo added 17 markers for WIT.

Action resumes today at the WIT gym as Iloilo Scholastic Academy take on Bethany Life Christian Academy at 2 p.m. and Santa Clarita International School Primes face off with John B. at 3:30 p.m./PN
