ILOILO City – The information technology (IT) sector can help expedite this city’s development, said a member of the local academe.

During the launching of the Green Technology Business Incubation (GTBI) by the West Visayas State University (WVSU) on Tuesday at Westown Hotel, Mandurriao district, WVSU president Dr. Luis M. Sorolla noted the contributions of the IT sector to Iloilo’s business growth.

“We recognize that business is one of the important factors in development and progress. As we can see, Iloilo City is fast tracking progress … The IT industry can help speed up the development. Its contributions are vast,” he said.

Sorolla furthermore said WVSU is committed to be one of the partners of the city to achieve economic development, but emphasized that the academe and the private sector cannot achieve it alone.

“We need other partners … let me emphasize that the best things that we do, the productive things that we do, the enjoyable things that we do are the things that we do with a partner,” he noted.

The WVSU chief also stressed that the city has many talents when it comes to the IT sector. But the challenge is how to make these talents’ ideas work for the betterment of the city.
“The IT ideas are there … the challenge is how we translate these ideas to be productive and profitable contributions to development … that is another thing,” Sorilla said.
