ILOILO City – The city government’s financial assistance of from P2,500 to P5,000 was certainly not enough for households that fire displaced on Sunday to start a new life, according to Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog.
He appealed for more help from the public.
Easter Sunday’s fire in a squatters’ area of Barangay Lopez Jaena Norte, La Paz district totally gutted 52 houses and partially damaged four others.
“Mas maayo lang na kita ang nagabulig sangsa kita ang ginabuligan,” Mabilog said in a speech during yesterday’s city hall flag-raising ceremony.
The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) provide relief goods such as sardines, noodles and rice but Mabilog said the fire victims did not have kitchen utensils like cooking pots, ladles, spoons and forks, among others.
“Basi may ma-share kamo, pasalamatan gid na nila,” said Mabilog.
The fire victims also needed clothes, towels, soaps, toothbrushes, and toothpastes, added the mayor.
Some of them temporarily sought shelter at the barangay hall of Lopez Jaena Norte and the Aglipayan Church in La Paz while others stayed with relatives.
CSWDO is giving a financial assistance of P5,000 to each households with totally damaged houses and P2,500 each to those with partially damaged houses.
Eleven persons were also injured in the fire./PN
