Jake Cuenca slammed for tweets lauding ‘Goyo,’ belittling rom-coms

JAKE Cuenca incurred the wrath of fans for his controversial tweet about the historical film “Goyo” and romantic comedies (rom-coms) in the Philippine movie industry.

“Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” is the period film top-billed by Paulo Avelino, a close friend of Jake. In his now deleted Twitter post, Jake encouraged people to watch “Goyo” while saying that there is a greater need to watch this kind of movie compared to rom-coms.

As of now, the only rom com being screened in cinemas is “The Hows Of Us” starring Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla.

Jake wrote: “#goyo is a treasure! As Filipinos it’s our obligations to watch the film! It’s our heritage our history more than rom coms we need to watch this film to learn. It’s our local Lincoln!”

Netizens retaliated against Jake, prompting him to delete his tweet and issue an apology.

“I would like to apologize for my tweet,” he shared. “I wasn’t pertaining to another film #thou aside from #goyo. It was wrong of me to compare genres but I wasn’t comparing both films because both films are great. Just happy to have variety in the cinema and we should support them all. My bad.” (Push)
