Japanese fugitive nabbed in Iloilo

ILOILO – A Japanese wanted by authorities in Tokyo for alleged robbery, extortion and involvement in telecommunications fraud was arrested at the port of Guimbal town recently.

Bureau of Immigration (BI) commissioner Norman Tansingco identified the Japanese fugitive as 43-year-old Yohhei Yano. He was arrested on Jan. 17 by BI’s fugitive search unit (FSU).

Tansingco said Yano was arrested at the request of the Japanese authorities in Manila, which sought the BI’s help in locating him.

“He will be deported for being an undesirable alien. He is a fugitive from justice in his country,” Tangsingco said on Saturday.

BI-FSU chief Rendel Ryan Sy said an arrest warrant was issued by the summary court in Yakkaichi, Japan on Aug. 4 last year after charges of robbery and extortion were filed against Yano.

Sy added that Yano is being investigated for alleged involvement in the illegal activities of a Japanese syndicate operating a telecom fraud in 2019.

“He is also an undocumented alien, as his passport was already revoked by the Japanese government,” Sy said.

The suspect is now being held at the BI warden facility at Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City, pending deportation proceedings. (PNA)/PN
