ILOILO – Archbishop Emeritus Angel Lagdameo of the Archdiocese of Jaro died on Friday morning, July 8. He was 81.
A former president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, he was confined for over a week at St. Paul’s Hospital Iloilo.
According to Reverend Father Angelo Colada, director of the Archdiocese of Jaro’s Social Communications Office, Lagdameo, a native of Quezon province, had been in and out of the hospital in the past few months.
“Nag-undergo sia sang operation sa jaw kay naga-brittle daw. Tapos balik naman sia sa ospital until subong tungod nga nag-complicate na sa lawas…We tried our best man, we did everything,” said Colada.
Lagdameo served as archbishop of Jaro for 18 years from 2000 until 2018. He was succeeded by Archbishop Jose Romeo Lazo.
He will be buried at the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral on a date to be announced soon.
There will be a wake either at the cathedral or the Archbishop’s Palace prior to the burial.
Lagdameo was born on Aug. 2, 1940, in Lucban, Quezon.
He was ordained a priest on Dec. 19, 1964.
Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Oreto and Auxiliary Bishop of Cebu on June 19, 1980.
He was ordained bishop on Aug. 12, 1980. On Jan. 31, 1986, he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Dumaguete and succeeded on May 30, 1989. He was installed as second Bishop of Dumaguete on August 2, 1989.
On March 11, 2000 he was appointed Archbishop of Jaro. His installation took place on May 9, 2000./PN
