ILOILO City – “You are entering a cathedral, not going to the beach,” reminds Reverend Father Angelo Colada to people entering the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral, emphasizing the importance of appropriate attire.
Starting July 1, the cathedral is mandating a “proper dress code” for all.
Father Colada, the director of the Archdiocese of Jaro’s Social Communication Office, said, “Attire should be decent, or at least presentable. We encourage dresses, but understand not everyone is comfortable in them.”
The main thing is not to appear as though “you’re merely wandering around or going to the beach,” Father Colada explained.
He also said while closed shoes are preferable, allowances are made for those with medical issues or financial constraints.
Colada pointed out that the specifics of what constitutes “proper attire” are generally understood by the community — formality in the presence of God is expected.
“You are in the presence of the Lord, so wear what is proper if you truly value the Eucharist,” Colada stressed.
He further clarified that failure to comply with the dress code would not result in denial of church entry. However, Colada expressed hope for adherence out of respect for the prayer and worship environment.
The Jaro Cathedral attracts numerous devotees daily, and particularly on Sundays.
Colada clarified that other churches within the Archdiocese of Jaro have their own individual dress code guidelines.
“Some churches even prepare long skirts and veils for tourists or devotees visiting to pray,” said Colada.
Generally, the Archdiocese of aro encourages all devotees to wear Sunday dress when attending Mass.
“This is a reminder to be aware of the church’s instructions and rules, which sometimes are forgotten, especially by the youth who may not be aware of the traditional Sunday dress,” said Colada./PN
