‘Join Earth Hour tonight’

ILOILO City – The city government is enjoining all Ilonggos to join tonight’s Earth Hour.

During the annual Earth Hour, communities, industries and individuals switch off non-essential lights for an hour to conserve energy and reduce carbon footprints.

The collective activity can counter global warming and climate change, said Mayor Jose Espinosa III.

He ordered the switching off of streetlights and signages in this city from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. as the city government’s participation in the global event.

Earth Hour started in 2007 as a single city initiative in Sydney, Australia. It has grown into a global movement with hundreds of millions of people from more than 7,000 cities and towns in 178 countries and territories across every continent switching off their lights, creating history as the world’s greatest environmental action.

Espinosa urged all city officials and employees to observe Earth Hour and disseminate the information about it to all.

Climate change is the concern not only of the national government but of all Ilongogs, he stressed.

Meanwhile, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region 6 invites Ilonggos to join and witness the yearly Earth Hour at SM City Iloilo Southpoint tonight.

“Ilonggos will once again show their support in saving and protecting our Mother Earth by participating in this event,” said Regional Director Jim Sampulna.

He added: “We at the DENR are also encouraging other people who can’t make it to the program to participate in their own home or community. We are hoping that conserving energy will not only last an hour but for a longer time. Let this event be the kick off of the true change of climate change.”/PN
