ILOILO City – The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region 6 called on local government units (LGUs) in Western Visayas to support the national cleanup today.
Dubbed “Bayan Ko, Linis Ko”, the program promotes cleanliness in coastal and inland waterways, esteros, creeks, public places, parks, schools, churches, public and private establishments and all other areas nationwide.
It also strengthens the implementation of Republic Act (RA) 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Jeanette Sapilan, EMB-6 officer-in-charge and concurrent chief of Finance and Administrative Division, said Basura Patrollers (BP) were assigned to monitor the LGUs.
“BPs are tasked to monitor the LGUs and their violations on the implementation of RA 9003 especially littering, open dumping and open burning of waste in their area of jurisdiction,” she said.
The BPs will report the findings and observations to the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) and the barangay shall be included in the filing of cases in the Office of the Ombudsman, if they fail to do their responsibilities in the implementation of the law.
Forester Vicente Losbañes of the Provincial Environmental Management Unit-Guimaras and OIC chief of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Section said LGUs are mandated to comply with RA 9003.
“It is very important that we maintain proper management disposal of waste in order to have a healthy and clean environment,” he said.
He also said that financial assistance will be provided in the establishment of Materials Recovery Facility to eight selected LGUs and four LGUs will be provided with a shredder.
For further inquiries on the conduct of the national clean-up program, the public may contact their respective municipal environment and national resources office.
